they say is a scan eagle drone made by boeing iran says the drone was spying and the iranian navy brought it down hacking into electronics. the u.s. navy says it's not missing a drone in the middle east. i'm joined by elise in washington. first u.s. far from the only country to possess drones neen that part of the world, multiple countries do. could the aircraft belong to someone else? >> well, certainly, michael. the u.s. says none of its drones are missing and it follows it could belong to someone else. the united states has identify the 76 countries that use this type of drone country and many u.s. allies in the persian gulf are also using it. but it's unclear how iran got a hold of it anyway. it's possible that it got lost or it had a mechanical failure. it's not clear that it shot down. >> exactly. one of the questions that's been asked, and they've claimed to have done this before, in fact this announcement comes a day to the -- a year to the day after iran claimed to have shot down another u.s. drone and they say that one crashed in the iranian desert. >> that's right. it's a great

. tonight one of the u.s. navy's deployed special forces commanders is dead. he was in afghanistan and military investigators are working on the belief that he took his own life. here's our pentagon correspondent barbara starr with what few details we have so far. >> reporter: very sad news this holiday weekend for u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s. the navy is investigating the death in afghanistan of one of its most senior deployed s.e.a.l. officers as an apparent suicide. a u.s. military official tells cnn. navy commander joe w price 42 years old, died december 22nd, while serving as the commanding officer of s.e.a.l. team 4. a group of more than 2 dozen commandos conducting combat operations in the southern command of the country. that u.s. military official who's directly familiar with the event said the family has been notified of the death, and has been notified and is being investigated as an apparent suicide. there is no indication at this time that commander price was involved in any military related investigations or any controversies the officials said. all indications are, when he d

, a member of the team, a navy s.e.a.l., sadly was killed. he was a member of s.e.a.l. team six, the same elite unit that took part in the raid that killed osama bin laden. president obama paid tribute to the fallen s.e.a.l. saying quote, he gave his life for his fellow americans, end quote. chris lawrence is at the pentagon right now with home run on this mission. first of all, i think, chris, a lot of people didn't even know there was a doctor who had been kidnapped and needed rescuing. what's the story behind this? >> and that's not all that unusual. a lot of times, they will not publicize a kidnapping while they are still sorting out the particulars or trying to ascertain whether they might launch a rescue mission. it often does more harm than good to put it out there and put the details out there. so that's not all that unusual. in this case, the doctor was working for morning star. a non-profit agency. he was with two local afghan, i believe at least one of them was a doctor as well, and they were coming back from a rural medical clinic east of kabul when armed men basically stopped

this iranian claim that they captured a small u.s. drone, u.s. navy, i know, has already said all unmanned air vehicles have been accounted for that are operating in the middle east region. are you hearing anything different? what could iran think it has that it doesn't or is it another country's drone? >> reporter: if you look at iran's video, it is a scan eagle drone which, quite frankly, sort of like honda civics. everybody has one. you can buy them pretty much on the open market. the belief is that they got it from the persian gulf state, united emirates, which have scan eagle drones like the u.s. navy does. but it's believe d that the iranians may have managed to steal one disassembled or someone even in that government under the table sold them one. they do acknowledge it looks like a scan eagle but it's not american. and they believe the iranians simply somehow got it off the shelf. this is not top shelf. that is horse and buggy technology. >> not even honda civic. all right, all right, jim miklaszewski, at the pentagon this morning. thank you, sir. >>> up next, cliff counting. where is
to us from iran. officials claiming that the iranian navy forces shot down a u.s. drone over the persian gulf earlier this morning. a spokesman for the u.s. says there are no missing drones. what are you hearing about how all this all happened and the public declaration that they had a u.s. drone. >> reporter: that's right. the iranians are claiming that they captured a drone that was flying over the u.s. they said that the drone was on a reconnaissance mission gathering data over iran and that it isn't the first kind of situation of its kind. they said that the drone was on a reconnaissance mission and iranian troops have been monitoring it over a few days and captured it and electronically jammed it and brought it down. then, later state tv showed revolutionary guard commenders inspecting a drone that they brought down in front of a map of the persian gulf that says we will trample america under our feet. the u.s. denied that this drone had been captured but this happened last year as well, thomas. iran captured electronically jammed and captured the u.s. drone. the u.s. denied that it
so, so the big question is how would he know all that? he spent more than 20 years in the navy. he worked in the intelligence field. he was a submarine warfare specialist. he had not only a top secret clearance, but also authorizes for what's called special access, which limits the amount of people who can view highly sensitive material. he had that access. he hadn't been out of the navy for more than a year when fbi agents started tracking him and set up this sting and this undercover operation, and that's how they caught him. >> we know if there was any classified information that was actually released? >> reporter: no. there were never actually any real russian agents, so to speak. these were all undercover agents, b it is very, very serious. i mean, the navy will almost always tell you exactly where their carriers and surface ships are located in any given moment. they never reveal the location of the submarine. that is a highly classified part of the u.s. navy. he faces life in prison if he is convicted of this charge. >> wow. okay. chris, thank you. appreciate it. >>> photogr

-elected. >>> turning to overseas news from afghanistan. one of our country's greatest, a navy s.e.a.l. has died from his wounds after helping successfully rescue an american hostage that was being held by the taliban. this all happened over the weekend during an operation to save dr. phillip joseph who was kidnapped by the taliban last week. the military raid was ordered after intelligence indicated the doctor was in imminent danger. secretary of defense leon panetta issued a statement last night commenting the special forces that carried out the raid. he said he was deeply saddened by the soldier's death whose name has not yet been released. >>> now to the ongoing crisis in syria. the civil war now spilling over the border into lebanon where at least 17 people were killed in recent clashes between supporters and opponents of president assad. this as syrian rebels continue to make advances continuing much of the countryside and the open road. richard engel amazingly made his way inside syria and filed this report just outside of the nation's largest city, aleppo. >> reporter: as this conflict drags
